The present invention relates to a drive or feeding roll or roller the surface of which is permanently provided with spikes or equivalent grasping means which project substantially radially beyond the surface proper of the roll. The invention provides an essential reduction in spike damage, the feeding roll being mainly characterized in that it is coated with a layer of rubber or with a layer of any other, equivalent elastic material in view of reducing the spike damage caused to the wood material to be fed.
