Styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and ABS type polymers made by polymerising styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of an elastomer such as butadiene rubber, are treated with an aq. soln. of an alkali (bi)sulphide to remove traces of residual acrylonitrile monomer, which is toxic and represents a health hazard during processing and use of the polymer. Pref. the treatment is carried out at 100-110 degrees C of the alkali (bi)sulphide necessary to react with the acrylonitrile present.
|
