PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication method that can perform mutual authentication based on a common key in consideration of the expiration date of a public key certificate and enhance safety and reliability of communications.SOLUTION: A controller 1 and equipment 2 perform mutual authentication using a public key certificate 122 of the controller 1 and a public key certificate 222 of the equipment 2 to generate a common key. The expiration date of the public key certificate 122, 222 of one of the controller 1 and the equipment 2 is set to the common key. When the expiration date set in the common key has not yet expired, the controller 1 and the equipment 2 perform mutual authentication with the common key with neither the public key certificate 122 of the controller 1 nor the public key certificate 222 of the equipment 2.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
