PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module suitable for high speed modulation, in which increase in the electrical resistance and decrease in the reliability are suppressed, at a low cost.SOLUTION: An optical module includes a surface-emitting laser element having a lower reflector and an upper reflector constituting an optical resonator, an active layer located between the lower reflector and the upper reflector, and outputting laser signal light of horizontal multi-mode by application of a modulation signal. When operating the surface-emitting laser element with a modulation signal, first suppression ratio of the intensity of higher-order mode light of secondary mode to the intensity of main mode light in the horizontal mode of the laser signal light is adjusted to a value for suppressing the mode competition noise contained in the laser signal light. |
