Novel bismuth-rich pyrochlore-type compounds are described having the formula: wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Ru, ?r and mixtures thereof and wherein X is greater than zero and less than or equal to about 1.0 and y is greater than or equal to zero and less than or equal to about 1.0. Electrochemical devices containing these compounds as electrocatalyst materials for oxygen electrodes are also described.
