2-Ethoxy-4-chloro-5 -carbethoxy-pyrimidine of formula (I) is new. (I) is an intermediate for pyromidic acid and pipernidic acid antibacterials which are the condensation prods. with amino bases of 6-carbethoxy-8-ethyl-2-ethoxy -5- oxo-5,8-dihydropyrido(2,3- d) pyridimide. (I) is pref. prepd. by condensing ethoxy urea salt with ethyl ethoxy methylene malonate in the presence of alkali, and treating a suspension of the prod. with thionyl chloride.
