Thin flexible polyester film - used to convert windows to double glazing for simplicity and lightweight

Double glazing for thermal and acoustic insulation may be effected by a transparent blind drawn down parallel to the face of a basic single-glazed window, where the blind is a thin plastic film pref. of polyester 175-250 microns thick. The tension in the film is pref. controlled by springs acting on a rotary storage drum to a couple of 4.5 N,m at each end. The edges of the film slide through seal channels to maintain alignment and exclude draughts between the film and the adjacent window. Simpler and lighter than fitting conventional rigid double glazing panels. The film may be transparent and/or tinted and/or stabilised against exposure to UV light.
