A detinning process comprises exposing tin (alloy) plated articles to a heated soln. of an alkali and a quinone (other than anthraquinone) or a quinone deriv. dissolved in a solvent in which stannate is soluble. If the articles are coated with lacquer, the soln. additionally contains an organic delacquering agent and, if the article is made of steel and has an iron/tin alloy layer, the soln. additionally contains an iron complexing agent. The quinone is pref. a hydroquinone or a naphthoquinone. The process is useful for recovering tin and steel from lacquered tin plated steel cans or for recovering tin lubricant from drawn and ironed two-piece steel cans during can mfr. The detinning rate is more rapid than that of prior sodium nitrite detinning agents.
|
