Water- insol. haptoglobin prepns. absorb Hb, and therefore, prevent hemolytic kidney damage, in extracorporeal circulation. Haptoglobin is rendered insol. by crosslinking with freshly pptd. fibrin by such agents as glutaraldehyde or carbodiimide. The adsorption surface of the prepn. is increased by its application to polyester, polyacetate, or other fibers. Thus, haptoglobin crosslinked by glutaraldehyde with fibrin (384 mg haptoglobin/g prepn.) absorbed 115 mg Hb/g prepn.
