PRODUCTION OF HYDROGEN AND CHLORINE

PURPOSE:To produce hydrogen and chlorine simultaneously under low voltage with good efficiency by supplying hydrochloric acid into an anode chamber partitioned by a specific kind of ion exchange membrane and subjecting the same to DC electrolysis. CONSTITUTION:A gas and liquid permeable anode consisting of platinum group metals and alloys and their oxides or graphite and a cathode consisting of graphite carrying these are closely adhered onto at least one surface of a fluorine-contg. cation exchange membrane of 1.0-4.0 milli equivalent ion-exchange capacity per gram of dry resin contg. P-contg. ion exchange groups as phosphonic acid groups. These anode and cathode of 0.01-30mu average pore sizes and 30-90% porosities are used. Hydrochloric acid of 0.1-12N concn. is put into the anode chamber partitioned by this cation exchange membrane and is electrolyzed at 10-100A/dm<2> current densities, so that hydrogen is produced from the cathode chamber and chlorine from the anode chamber simultaneously.
