1495803 Helically winding and unwinding narrow strip material GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 13 May 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 20067/75 Heading D1J A tyre building strip S and an underlying strip of non-adherent separating material C are together wound free of twist onto a reel 16 in a continuous plurality of helical covolutions in successive layers alternating in helical lead; and the strip S is then fed off the reel free of twist to a tyre building machine 14, Fig. 3 In Fig. 5 a truck 22 is coupled at 28 to a platform 31 that carries a screw thread 45 extending through a fixed nut 47. Rotation of the screw thread 45 by a motor 41 causes the platform 31 to be displaced, and limit switches (58, 60), Fig. 1 (not shown) cause a change over of clutches 54, 56 at the end of each traverse motion in a manner effecting a reversal of drive to the screw 45. When the cylinder 16 is fully wound it is uncoupled from the platform 31 and moved to a paying out station, Fig. 3, where it is coupled to a platform 78 of a second traversing mechanism 80. The strip S and separating material C are wound off via a displacement sensing means 100. If the strips tend to move laterally relatively to the sensing means 100, the sensing means generates a signal which is communicated to a control valve 97 on the platform 78. The control valve 97 thereupon adjusts the effective pressure at one side or other of a piston 94 in an hydraulic cylinder 93 sufficiently to cause the piston 94 to move the trolley 22 to a setting in which the strips being wound off the cylinder 16 are in correct alignment with the sensing means 100 and thereby with a tyre building machine 14 The non-adherent separating material C is wound up onto a take-up roll and the tyre building strip S is fed to the lyre building machine 14. In Fig. 3 a conventional brake 88 cooperates with a brake disc 91 fixed on the shaft 84 to provide a back tension to the strip S as it is pulled off the cylinder 16. |
