A multilayer thermal insulator, for use in an oven with a nonoxidizing atm., was prepd. by lamination of a gas permeable felt of carbon fibers with a graphite fabric by a means of a carbonizable binder, such as phenolic resin. Thus, a felt of carbon fibers was impregnated with an EtOH soln. of a phenolic resin resol, and the impregnated felt was formed into a hollow cylinder. A flexible graphite fabric was coated to 600g/m2 with the same resol soln. The insulator was heated 30 times to 1400≦̸C in a vacuum oven, followed each time by cooling to room temp, and after this it showed no abnormality proving that it was suitable for extreme stress.
