Water cooled IC-engine - has heat exchanger between exhaust and cooling water to aid cold starting

The engine (1) has a heat exchanger (8) formed by two concentric tubes. The engine cooling water flows through the central tube. The annular space between the two tubes has an inlet (6) from the engine exhaust manifold (4) and an outlet (9) to the exhaust outlet so that exhaust gas can flow through the annular space. The inlet (6) from the manifold is controlled by a valve (24) which closes the engine exhaust as it opens the inlet to the heat exchanger. The valve is operated by a thermostat which responds to the engine temperature so that the exhaust is used to heat the cooling water during cold starting.
