Heat-treatment furnace walking beam - has grates on beams scraping scale from floor into discharge shafts

The walking-beam furnace is for the heat-treatment of metal items forming scale, partic. of steel, having fixed and walking beams and a lifting mechanism for the latter below the hearth. The drive has rams moving up and down and others moving to and fro, extending out of the furnace bottom and coupled to the walking beams, and also actuates a scale-discharge mechanism. The latter mechanism has discharge grates (6) coupled to the walking beams (4), the intervals between the grates in the walking direction being less than the walking stroke. On the return stroke of the walking beams the grates scrape along the furnace floor, in which there are transverse discharge shafts (8) for the scale extending for the width of the furnace.
