An inkjet printer with controllable ink droplet charge comprises collectors (30) for collecting ink droplets not contributing to the actual printing process and a return device (32, 34) for returning the fluid printing ink, collected by the collector (30), to an ink reservoir (10). An optical monitoring device (36, 38, 40) is mounted on the return device (32) and connected to a monitoring circuit which prevents the production of ink droplets in the event of the ink droplets not involved in the printing process deviating from their trajectory directed towards the collector (30). <IMAGE>
