Appts. for forming fastener element free gaps in a continuous slide fastener chain includes a support with in saquence a feed with drive and pressure roller for transporting the chain, a pre-spreader with opposed and relatively movable guide arms forming a passage for the chain and a plunger for entering between and spreading the stringer tape facing edges. A tensioner(11) has a weighted roller with bearing movable along a guide rail(39) and a quide roller(42) adjacent the feed, and a gapper has a punch and die to sever a group of elements, a pair of grippers removing the connecting parts of the group from respective tapes.
