A method of purifying exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine such as a diesel engine by cooling the exhaust gases below their dew point and then separating out the liquid produced and the solid particles contained in the exhaust gases. Apparatus for performing the method comprises an exhaust duct (19) having a cooling surface (35) connected to a coolant circuit (21) of, for example a refrigerator (3), and a liquid separator (23),(24),(25).
