Temperature regulation for wires which have subsequently been insulated by plastic material are known as a result of so-called conductor preheating apparatuses. In order to save these apparatuses and the energy required for operating them, reheating devices have been allocated to the upstream annealing paths. Since it is uneconomical to cool the wire after the annealing path in order to heat it again subsequently, hot-water cooling systems have already been used in order to use a portion of the heat from the annealing process as a result of a defined water temperature. This cooling operates with a large amount of inertia so that considerable quantities of waste can occur at the high flowrates. Temperatures above 100 DEG C cannot be achieved. The invention indicates the means for controlling the water column of the cooling path as a function of the initial temperature of the wire, so that a very large temperature range can be controlled very quickly.
