Title compds. (I; R = H, C1-5 alkyl; Y = H, halogen, 3, 4-dichloro-, 3, 5-dichloro-, 3, 5-dimethyl-, 3, 5-dimethoxy-, 3, 5-bis-trifluoromethyl; A = CN, O=C-R1; R1 = OH, OR, NH-NHR), useful as fungicides, were prepd. by the cyclization of IB in the presence of tert. base. IB was obtained by the reaction of IA and II. Thus, 37.6 g 3, 5-dichlorophenyl-isocyanate and 38 g diethylmethyltartronate (2-methyl-2-hydroxymalonic diethylester) were stirred for 3 hr in benzene, and refluxed for 12 hr with 1 ml triethylamine to give 45 g N-(3, 5-dichlorophenyl)-5-methyl-5-carboethoxy-1, 3-oxazolidin-2, 4-dione.
