The installation has a duct for admitting fresh air (14), a duct (9) by which used air is extracted and a conduit for extracting smoke (3). All three are connected to a room (1) by openings (4,11,17). Used air is extracted by the ventilator (19) and passes through the air to air heat exchanger (23) to heat the incoming air circulated using the ventilator (21). The rooms of the building are kept at a slight overpressure and the opening (17) of the fresh air intake duct can be sealed.
