Head for driving timber crate-staple - uses orbital U=section press to bend wire retained by mandrel and pushed away by trailing pusher sliding between legs

The stapling head is used to make crates, with a cutting and bending press (8,9) which acts with a counter cutter (24) cum wire (27) guide and a retractable wire-retaining mandrel (30). The latter acts with a staple-pusher (10) to which the re-action is provided by an anvil (35) applied to the timber. The bending press may have a 'U' section with the staple pusher fitting between its legs, both components having a curved profile whilst being built onto separate levers (5,6) with a common fulcrum (2). The locus of the profiles coincides with the fulcrum, the fulcrum axis is normal to the staple drive (F), and the axis is offset so that the repose position of the head is outside the swept path of the bending component and the pusher. The drive for the levers ensures sequential action and the bending component leads the pusher.
