In this device, there is provided a smoke-gas chamber which is under the effect of a suction draught and which is equipped on opposite sides with plate-shaped water-holding tanks, projecting alternately into the chamber, for the S-shaped guidance of the smoke and combustion gases respectively, so that the heat energy contained in the smoke gases can be utilised to an increased extent for heating the water. The water-holding tanks can be widened at their ends facing the chamber wall, so as to form generally L-shaped or T-shaped bodies.
