The periscope sight (200) extends through an aperture in a vehicle body (100), its head (210) slewing about a vertical axis and being protected by a cowl (300) with one or more windows. The cowl rests on a base (110) fixed to the structure, and a turning drive (330) is included to rotate it about an axis coinciding with that of the head. Controls are included for measuring the angular interval between head and cowl, working in conjunction with the slewing drive to give optimum alignment of the head in relation to each of the cowl windows.
