Method and apparatus for producing tantalum pentoxide from tantalum hydroxide containing fluorine compounds without substantial co-production of tantalum fluorides. The tantalum hydroxide containing fluoride compounds are heated, in a reactor (12) in the presence of steam, supplied through pipe (30) to a temperature and for a time sufficient to convert the tantalum hydroxide to tantalum pentoxide, and the resulting tantalum pentoxide is recovered.
