PURPOSE:To proliferate the cells of a Boraginaceae plant, rapidly, and to produce a large amount of a naphthoquinone compound, stably, by culturing the cell in a liquid medium containing specific vitamins and amino acids at controlled concentrations. CONSTITUTION:The cells of a Boraginaceae plant, e.g. Lithospermum erythrorhizon Sieb. et Zucc., are subjected to the tissue culture in a liquid medium satisfying at least one, preferably two or more, especially all of the following concentration conditions, preferably at about 10-35 deg.C, especially at about 23-28 deg.C: Inositol concentration, <=50mg/l, thiamine concentration, <=0.05mg/l; pyridoxine concentration, <=0.25mg/l; nicotinic acid concentration, <=0.5mg/l; ascorbic acid concentration, <=1.0mg/l; glycine concentration, <=1.0mg/l; L-cystine concentration, <=5.0mg/l; and L-glutamic acid concentration, <=5.0mg/l. |
