Methanol is produced by passing a gaseous mixture of hydrogen and one or more carbon oxides (128) into contact with a plurality of different catalysts (C1, C2, C3) which are contained in a series of beds (113, 114, 115), the series of beds being arranged in a first assemblage (A1), the series of beds of catalysts within the first assemblage being operated at increasing tomperature levels in the direction of flow of the mixture. The resulting gaseous mixture (106) containing methanol is then cooled by indirect heat-exchange (116) and passed into contact with at least one further bed (117, 118) of catalyst (C1, C2) comprising a final assemblage (A2); and the gaseous stream (109) after leaving the final assemblage is cooled (126, 119, 120) and condensed (121) to recover the methanol as a liquid (112). |
