PURPOSE:To decrease the contact resistance and the weight of a bipolar separator, which is interposed between adjacent unit cells each consisting of an electrolyte layer and gas-diffusing electrodes, by forming the separator by the use of both a separator body having gas paths and a porous spongy metal. CONSTITUTION:A fuel cell (X) is constituted by interposing each bipolar separator 14 between unit cells 3 each consisting of an electrolyte layer 1 and nickel- alloy-system gas-diffusing electrodes 2a and 2b. The separator 14 consists of a stainless steel plate 17, side wall members 18a and 18b between which a concave path (A) for an oxidant gas is provided and side wall members 19a and 19b between which a concave path (B) for a fuel gas is provided. In addition, spongy metallic plates 16a and 16b made of a nickel-chromium alloy and having a porosity of 65-98% is filled in the paths (A) and (B). As a result, owing to the elasticity of the spongy metallic plates 16, the separators 14 are made in good contact with the unit cells thereby enabling electric resistance to be decreased. Besides, the weight of the entire separator 14 can be reduced. |
