This system comprises lengths of a ribbon 6 of flexible but strong material, generally rectangular in shape, the width of which is a function of the cross-section of the cable to which it is to be fitted, a number of slits 7 being cut in transversely from one of the longitudinal sides of the ribbon and extending over part of the width of the ribbon, the end 8 of each slit presenting no sharp angle, and openings 10 being provided close to the other side of this ribbon at regular intervals for the engagement of means of fastening it to the cable. <IMAGE>
