The invention relates to a method for automatic stacking on palettes, particularly of pieces of wood delivered by a machine located upstream. The method consists in transferring the pieces 22 arriving upstream on the fixed plate 2, then on a movable plate 4 capable of being moved in translation, as required, both vertically and horizontally. The movable plate 4, once full, is conveyed from a zone Z1 to an unloading zone Z2 where the receiving palette 41 is located, this being regardless of the height of this palette relative to the level at which the pieces 22 arrive. An automatic-control system regulates the various stages of the method and leads to total automation. The invention applies to any machine which has to stack pieces delivered at a high rate. <IMAGE>
