Propanediols I [Ar = (un)substituted aryl; R1, R2 = H, alkyl; R1R2 = alkylene, oxaalkylene, thiaalkylene, azaalkylene, Nalkylazaalkylene; alk = C2-5 alkylene; n = 0, 1 , useful in treating angina pectoris, arrhythmia and hypertension, were prepd. Thus, the cyano group of compound II was hydrolized to convert it into a carbamoylamino group to give I and its isomers.
