Two rollers (10, 18) are mounted freely rotatably in an axis-parallel manner in a housing (3) and limit between them a nip (28), through which the yarn to be braked is drawn. One roller (10) is mounted at a fixed location in the housing (3). The other roller (18) has a covering (19) made of elastomeric material. It is mounted in a pivotable fork (13) and can be pressed with adjustable prestress against the roller (10) of fixed location by a spring-loaded angle lever (23) acting the on the fork (13). A sleeve-shaped yarn-guide carrier (30) projects through a slot (31) in the housing (3) into the region of the nip (28). This yarn-guide carrier (30) is connected via a releasable lock to an arm (34) which is fastened to a lifting rod (35). A to-and-fro movement in the axial direction of the nip (28) is imparted to the lifing rod (35) and, via this, to the yarn-guide carrier (30), with the result that the passage point of the yarn through the nip (28) changes constantly. <IMAGE>
