The invention relates to a process for producing a refractory lining layer of predetermined density and a device for carrying out this process. With linings consisting of fibre material, it is difficult to ensure a density of predetermined magnitude and uniform adherence to this density in all zones. This difficulty is particularly serious if the lining layer must be introduced into a relatively narrowly confined space. According to the invention, blocks of fibre material are used which have a density greater than the predetermined density. The compressed blocks are placed into an assembly frame whose base area at least approximately corresponds to the cross-section of the lining layer to be produced. These blocks are brought into the intended position by means of the assembly frame and then ejected from the assembly frame. After ejection, the fibre material expands to the particular predetermined density.
