The expanding dowel has a cylindrical dowel body (1) and an expanding bolt (2), a central hole (12) having a non-round cross-section being located in the dowel body (1). The expanding bolt (2) projects into the central hole (12) and likewise has a non-round cross-section. By rotating the expanding bolt (2), the dowel body (1) is expanded for fixing in a retaining hole (7). The central hole (12) has latching depressions (13), which are arranged in a row, for the expanding bolt (2), so that the latter is locked in the expanded rotation position. <IMAGE>
