CONSTITUTION:Starting materials for glass are introduced into a flame and brought into a chemical reaction to produce fine glass particles for an optical fiber, and the particles are deposited to form a porous base material. At this time, the deposition system is held in an oxidizing atmosphere. By this method, oxygen defects and SiO2 defects which are easily attacked by hydrogen are remarkably reduced, so the stable transmission characteristics are maintained.
