PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of bubbles on the interface between a glass rod and a formed glass layer by preheating the glass rod before depositing glass produced by a vapor phase chemical reaction on the outside of the rod. CONSTITUTION:A glass rod consisting of a glass layer for a core and a glass layer for a clad or made of only a glas layer for a core is preheated. Glass produced by a vapor phase chemical reaction is deposited on the outside of the preheated glass rod to form a glass layer. By this method, bubbles are not generated on the interface between the outside of the glass rod and the glass layer formed around the rod, so the production of a reject is prevented.
