In refining molten steel contained in a vessel O2 is blown into the melt from above the melt surface so that an emulsion is formed above the surface. Slopping of the emulsion from the vessel is effected by blowing an inert gas into the vessel when slopping is imminent or has begun, along with the O2 and ceasing the flow of inert gas when slopping has stopped or is no longer a danger. Pref. the inert gas is Ar and is blown into the vessel admixed with the O2 through an O2 lance at a flow rate that is 5-30 vol. % of the O2 flow rate.
