The invention relates to vehicles of the van type for use as a habitation for camping. The subject is a lifting roof intended to selectively increase the head room of the vehicle. To this end the roof 12 of the vehicle 10 comprises a cover 24 which can be moved between a low position and a high position above an opening 14 made in the roof 12. Between the cover 24 and the edges of the opening 14 on the support 16 there are arranged inflatable means 18 comprising a plurality of superimposed thick tubes communicating with one another via holes 20 and with a peripheral tube 22 connected to a two-directional pump which can be manually controlled or driven by the vehicle engine. The roof comprises, moreover, at least one stabilising prop 30 for the cover in the top position mounted pivotably for folding purposes. <IMAGE>
