A characteristic transmitter is described which converts an analogue measured variable into an associated value, corresponding to a predetermined characteristic. The characteristic transmitter has an analogue/digital converter which converts the measured variable into a digital signal. The digital signal is applied to the address input of a read-only memory in which the value which has been assigned a specific value of the measured variable via the characteristic is stored in a memory location whose address is selected by means of the digital signal. A display and/or a control circuit reads the associated value from the read-only memory, via its data output.
