The belt retarding section in a folding unit includes two cams of the same shape and eccentricity arranged on a common shaft. The belt, which at least partially winds around these cams, is diverted between the two of them, there being a simultaneous displacement from the level of one cam to the level of the other cam. The level displacement is reversed by means of a deflection and/or guiding roller which is located in the region of the retarding section. By designing and arranging the two cams on the common shaft, acceleration and retardation of the belt section are achieved in synchronism with the rotation of the cams in the retarding section, with simultaneous path compensation, so that no linear displacement of the deflection rollers is necessary.
