A rate gyro 1 having a sensing axis and an accelerometer are arranged on a frame body 18. The frame body 18, with a stepping motor 24, is supported rotatably about the vertical axis 22 on a frame 23. The frame is mounted, for example, fixed to the vehicle. The sensing axis 20 of the gyro, the sensing axis 21 of the accelerometer and the vertical axis are aligned at right angles to one another. The north direction is determined by three measurements in the positions of the frame body 18 set by the stepping motor at 0 DEG , 90 DEG and 180 DEG . The accelerometer is used for determining the inclination of the vertical axis 22 from the vertical and the north direction angle determined by the gyro is correspondingly corrected. Furthermore, this arrangement can be used for sensing disturbance movements, for example due to sinking movements of the vehicle and their compensation.
