Method for creating and recognising writing characters of the Chinese ideogram type, the said characters comprising one or more radicals arranged in sectors of the area occupied by the character, the said method comprising the operating step of placing the radicals in memory and being characterised in that it comprises the additional operating steps of: i. for each character, placing the radicals of which it is formed in memory, as well as the sectors in which the constituent radicals of the character are contained; ii. searching in the set of characters for those which comprise the given radicals in their first, second, ... nth sector; and iii. taking as the character sought that which simultaneously comprises the desired radicals in the sectors 1 to n. <IMAGE>
