The invention relates to the technical field of heating appliances of the closed-hearth, solid-fuel boiler type and the like. The combustion method applicable to closed hearths is noteworthy in that, in order to avoid the phenomena of underpressure (depression) in the hearth opposing the underpressure (depression) in the smoke duct and giving rise to the formation of a "0" point in the combustion chamber, and in order to limit as far as possible the underpressure (depression) in the combustion chamber, combustion air is sucked into the hearth via a first duct 7 arranged under the hearth plate or loading grid, by acting simultaneously on the draught of the smoke- evacuation duct 12 of the closed hearth, this intervention being carried out by drawing off from a second duct 8 the same ambient air as that penetrating the first duct 7, this air being heated up in a sheath 10 adjoining the combustion chamber and evacuated into the said smoke-evacuation duct 12 to oppose and short-circuit the draught of the latter and its action on the hearth, the action and regulation on the two ducts being able to be provided by the control of two small vents 9-15 or shutters arranged and articulated at the inlet to the said ducts. <IMAGE>
