The present invention relates to a device for measuring the hardness of materials. This device essentially comprises a wheel 17 mounted on a support 18 and designed to form a continuous straight indentation 11 on the top surface 15 of a sample of material 12. An optical device comprising the sources 22, 23 enables an image 20 of the indentation 11 to be formed on a detector 21 which enables the width of the indentation to be measured and which transmits signals corresponding to this measurement to a data processing unit 31 designed to determine the hardness of the sample 12 as a function of the width of the indentation 11. This device enables a continuous measurement to be obtained of the hardness of materials. <IMAGE>
