PURPOSE:To enhance correction effects of a character pattern by adopting such a system that mesh conversion varying in accordance with line width is stored in memory beforehand and a line of a letter pattern is corrected at a stage of rounding processing. CONSTITUTION:A preprocessing circuit 6 makes an output of an A/D convertor 5 binary by a threshold at a certain level and stores a character pattern in a picture memory 7. In a rounding processing circuit 20 a constituting mesh of the character pattern is converted and a pattern to be investigated is made in a picture memory 11. The rounding processing circuit 20 consists of a mask scanning circuit 21 to mask-scan the picture memory 7 and take out pattern data for four mesh sequentially and an ROM 22 in which mesh conversion data are stored in the address in correspondence to address data of an output of the mask scanning circuit 21. An address of an ROM 22 is regulated by a line decision signal (i) and an retreatment command (j) from a character recognition part. According to an output of these address data, mesh conversion data in any of corresponding addresses are selected from the ROM 22 and outputted, and a pattern to be investigated is made in the picture memory 11.
