The invention relates to a clamping apparatus, which is used especially in conjunction with a tipping mechanism or the like, for holding and turning articles (spool 1) in a cylindrical receiving bore (bore sections 3 and 4). The clamping device, which is designed as a clamping spindle with clamping jaws (28), has a clamping piston (13) on which one or more clamping springs (disc springs) engage. The clamping springs (34) press the clamping piston (13) with a predefined force into the clamping position, in which the clamping jaws (28) are stretched radially outwards via spreading elements (25). For release, the clamping piston (13) is connected to a return device (36), which consists of a crank (50) and a threaded spindle (37) which is connected to the crank (50) via a gearwheel transmission system (41, 46) and engages into a threaded bush (15) of the clamping piston (13). Predefined clamping forces can be generated by means of the clamping apparatus, which forces permit reliable clamping without there being a danger of damage to the bearing surfaces or clamping surfaces of the object to be clamped. <IMAGE>
