Joining pistons of sintered oxide ceramics to the piston rod is achieved via a metallic connection element which is designed as a multiply slitted adapter sleeve 2. The adapter sleeve 2 has a bead 4, which can be spread apart by means of a cone 5 and which engages an annular groove 3 in the blind bore 8 of the piston. Prior to inserting the adapter sleeve 2, adhesive 7 is introduced into the blind bore 8, and the adapter sleeve 2 is then centred by means of a centring mount 1 and is tensioned. The tension is maintained until the adhesive 7 has set. <IMAGE>
