The invention relates to a bell valve (1, 32) for the pressure-resistant shutting off of highly abrasive media. In the case of such bell valves, the valve seat, but in particular the O-ring, is subjected to considerable wear by the grainy constituents of the medium. In this respect, the invention provides a protective sleeve (13, 25), which bears against the element carrying the medium and is pressed by an adjusting force against the valve plate (4, 21) or, when the valve plate is lifted off the valve seat (9), against a stop (15, 26). Furthermore, when bearing against the stop, the protective sleeve may be pushed forward with its rim which faces the valve plate almost into the plane of the O-ring (11, 23). A bell valve according to the invention is suitable in particular for use for the pressure-resistant shutting off of abrasive media. <IMAGE>
