This device consists of an optical imaging system, a radiation-sensitive transducer array and electronic comparison stages for each array element. By this means, the points of equal density of a radiation field can be converted into quantised electrical multi-point signals. These electrical signals contain all the information for, for example, generating control signals for tracking a point of equal density. In the real case of application, this device is used for detecting lines of a contour drawing. From the electrical multi-point signals, control signals can be generated by means of a logical circuit or by means of a microcomputer for driving a positioning system in such a manner that the sensor mounted on the positioning system tracks the drawing lines. These control signals for the drive are representative of the displacement path, that is to say of the drawn lines, and can be stored on some data medium for the purpose of later reproduction or further processing.
