The invention relates to a colour printer having an improved ink ribbon. The ink ribbon 72 of the printer 10 has a plurality of different colour zones arranged, along the length of the ribbon, so that the lightest colour is printed first, followed by the increasingly darker colours, regardless of the running direction of the ribbon. The colour zones may especially be separated by barrier zones and virgin zones so as to avoid contamination of the ribbon, which contamination is furthermore prevented by the use of improved guides.
