Dye composition comprising a cake of dyes which are chosen from the group of disperse dyes and of vat dyes, and a dispersing agent consisting of a sulphonated lignin obtained by reacting lignin with an aldehyde and a water-soluble sulphite or bisulphite. The sulphonated lignin employed is prepared by selectively isolating from black liquor lignins which have a molecular weight of more than 5000 and acidifying them to a pH of between 1.5 and 5.0 by washing with sulphuric acid.
